MVP stands for Minimum Viable Product, which refers to a product that has the most basic features. This approach is crucial for quickly obtaining user feedback and optimizing the product development process.

What is the freemium business model?

The freemium business model allows users to access basic features for free, while requiring payment for premium features. This model aims to build a large user base and increase potential customer conversion rates.

Which business model is better: freemium or subscription?

The business model determines how a startup generates revenue and thus plays a vital role in long-term success.

Definition and Purpose of MVP

The Role of Business Models

Business models are a critical component for ensuring a startup's sustainability. Different approaches, such as freemium and subscription models, carry significant differences in user acquisition, revenue streams, and user engagement. The choice of model depends on the target audience and market dynamics.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Freemium Model

What is Freemium?

Freemium is a business model where basic services are offered for free, while advanced features can be purchased by users for an additional fee. This model provides users with an opportunity to try the product with a low barrier to entry.

User Acquisition and Growth Potential

The greatest advantage of the freemium model is its potential for rapid user base growth. By 2026, it has been observed that 70% of startups using the freemium model have seen 5% of their users transition to premium services. This situation increases users' willingness to try the product first, subsequently providing opportunities for revenue generation through conversion rates.

Sustainability Issues

The disadvantage of the freemium model is that the vast majority of users remain limited to the free service. This can create challenges in establishing a sustainable revenue model in the long run.

Real Example: Spotify's Freemium Strategy

Spotify is a successful example of implementing the freemium model. Users can utilize the basic features of the app for free, but can transition to a premium subscription for an ad-free experience and additional features. This strategy has allowed Spotify to rapidly increase its user base and subsequently generate revenue.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Subscription Model

What is Subscription?

The subscription model is a business model where users gain continuous access for a specific fee. Users subscribe to the service for a certain period and gain access to all features during that time.

Revenue and User Loyalty

The subscription model allows for a regular revenue stream. By 2026, 60% of startups that transitioned to the subscription model reported establishing a steady revenue stream by the end of the first year. This model enhances user loyalty and fosters a longer-term customer relationship.

Initial Low User Attraction

However, the disadvantage of the subscription model is its potential to attract fewer users initially. Users often prefer a free trial opportunity, which can lead to a slower start for the subscription model.

Real Example: Netflix's Subscription Success

Netflix is a rapidly growing example of using the subscription model. Although it initially reached a certain user base, it successfully increased its subscription numbers over time by offering a diverse range of content and a user-friendly interface. Providing a continuous flow of content has encouraged users to stay on the platform and make regular payments.

Which Model Should You Choose? (Freemium vs Subscription)

Target Audience and Market Analysis

Target audience and market analysis are critical in determining which business model is more suitable. For instance, a freemium model may be more effective for an app popular among younger users, while a subscription model may be more appropriate for a startup offering professional services.

Long-Term Strategies

The long-term strategies for both models differ. In the freemium model, it is essential to continuously acquire users and increase conversion rates. In the subscription model, ensuring user loyalty and providing ongoing content is paramount.

Common Mistakes

What to Avoid

Incorrect Target Audience Selection: Failing to accurately identify the target audience can negatively impact the product's success.
Insufficient Market Research: Ignoring market dynamics can lead to the failure of the business model.
Excessive Free Content: In the freemium model, failing to provide sufficient value to encourage users to transition to premium content.
Poor User Experience: Neglecting user experience in the subscription model can weaken loyalty.
High Initial Pricing: In the subscription model, high initial prices can deter users from trying the product.

The Overlooked Point by Most Teams: Choosing the Right Model for the Target Audience

Misconceptions and Realities

Startup teams often assume that users will accept both models. However, the reality is often more complex. Users may want to try a service before committing to payment. Therefore, selecting a model that aligns with the target audience is essential.

Successful Application Example

An e-commerce startup initially adopted the freemium model but faced low conversion rates. When it became evident that users were unwilling to try premium services, they transitioned to a subscription model. As a result, user loyalty increased, and revenue streams became steady.
